PRESTEIGNE: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES: On the 4th October 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.1 Tour displayed in/near Presteign, (now spelt Presteigne of course, but does anybody know exactly where?). They had just returned from a tour of Ireland via displaying at Caernarvon the previous day. Some idea of the relentless programme they pursued week after week, month after month can be seen from their itinerary in Eire.

12th September CARLOW, 13th WEXFORD, 14th DUNGARVAN, 15th FERMOY, 16th ATHY, 17th DUBLIN, 18th BOYLE, 19th BUNDORAN, 20th SLIGO, 21st CASTLEBAR, 22nd BALLINROSE, 23rd NENAGH, 24th KILLARNEY, 25th TRALEE, 26th NEWCASTLE WEST, 27th MALLOW, 28th CAHIR, 29th TULLAMORE and on the 30th ATHLONE. On the 1st October they displayed at DROGHEDA before flying back to the UK, (reaching CAERNARVON?) on the 2nd October.

Obviously no account was made for weather considerations and the pilots and crews hardly ever had a day off. It all seems unbelievable today of course but somehow they seemed to have achieved it.

Because Presteigne is right on the border with HEREFORDSHIRE it is of course possible the actual flying site was in that County?
