PRESTON SANDS: Temporary beach airfield

NOTES: There are accounts of Avro 504s lined up for joy-riding flights on PRESTON SANDS in Paignton probably in either/both Easter or Whitsun 1919 (?) The Avro Company at that time were keen to exploit the joy-riding market wherever and whenever during that post-war period, when of course after WW1 had finished, massive contracts to build aircraft were cancelled.

Using their surplus aircraft for joy-rides around the coast especially, was seen as a major part in the survival strategy for the company. And it worked.
