Location: Just S of the once famous 'Heads of the Valleys Road', the A465, and N of Merthyr Tydfil town centre

NOTES:  As can be seen, in the first picture (2001) the helipad was in a grass area. Later a proper helipad was laid out on the SW side of the hospital.

However, in looking into this site I found a most extraordinary story. In 2017 a new helipad was opened to the N of the hospital at a cost of £700k, but Air Ambulance crews have refused to use it, preferring the old helipad - citing safety issues.

I can only guess of course, but I would not be at all surprised knowing the utterly despicable arrogance, and often appalling ignorance, of so many UK senior hospital management teams, if, in this case, the Air Ambulance Service was not consulted? I have found that some, (many?), do not even consult their own staff when rebuilding their hospitals - which beggers belief. And of course, the degree of gerrymandering taking place in South Wales over recent decades almost defies comprehension.
