Private airstrip
PRIVATE AIRSTRIP
Runway: Roughly: 15/33 320 grass
NOTES: The information regarding the existence of this airstrip came from the AAIB report EW/G2015/03/04 regarding a landing accident involving the Jabiru UL-450 G-CNAB.
The AAIB report states that the airstrip is (was) near to HUCKNALL aerodrome. However, a fairly good look on 'Google Earth' failed to identify a positive location. However, HUCKNALL is situated NNW of Nottingham city centre whereas the report also states that this airstrip is NE of Nottingham - and therefore some distance from HUCKNALL. Can anybody help to resolve this?
Having travelled and flown in every country in western Europe, (plus a fair few more countries), the reason I am keen to make a note of these private airstrips is simply because, in the UK, we have far, far more measured by square miles of land or head of population than any other country in the world. It has been estimated that at any given time in the last thirty or forty years there are probably more than five hundred and fifty in use.
Some of course are barely used and some last for just a short period. On the other hand others expand to become similar to licensed aerodromes with many facilities and with several aircraft based there. It is quite common in both cases, either like the latter or strips used by just one owner with one aircraft, for continual use to extend over several decades.
Without any doubt whatsoever, and although many strip operators are highly secretive, their existence forms an unique and important part of our amazingly rich aviation heritage. This is partly explained by an odd quirk in our planning regulations which I assume still applies? And this is that, if an airstrip is not used for more that twenty-eight days a year, it does not require planning permission.
