PUTNEY: Aircraft ‘factory’

Operated by: Alliott Vernon (A V) Roe

Location: Putney (in his brothers stable)

Period of operation: 1907, possibly before?

NOTES:  Clearly not a flying site as such, but I do think that a mention of a site such as this deserves being recorded. It being very much in the nature of this 'Guide'.

In those days it was common practise to build aircraft in whatever premises were available, (and affordable?), and the aircraft were then transported to a suitable field for final assembly and flight testing. A V Roe started building his first aircraft in the stable of his brothers house before moving it to BROOKLANDS in 1908 where he made his first ‘hops’, one of the longest of which was in front of two witnesses who provided a signed testimonial.

This ‘proof’ was discounted by the Aero Club, (who acted on behalf of the FAI because neither of the witnesses were accredited. Later Roe was operating in the LEE MARSHES area (see seperate entry) in NE London, and then active in the north west of England.
