A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for finding this location and providing the maps and photos. It must be pointed out that this 'Guide' is mainly intended to be a project to record known flying sites in the U.K. Sometimes, as in this case, the clues can come from just one source of information. Such as a newspaper article.
Photo One is of Robert Slack published in Flight magazine on the 20th September 1913, and Photo Three was also published in the same issue of Flight showing the aeroplane Slack was flying at that time.
The article which provided the evidence of this event was published in the Sheerness Times Guardian on the 3rd January 1914.
The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database. From what I have learnt over the years, driving a car, especially a high powered car, was far more potentially dangerous than flying an aeroplane. I am of course assuming that Robert Slack was driving a high powered car when he was killed in Radlett?
So, how ironic to hear that this highly respected pilot met his premature end, driving a car. This said of course, considering his risk taking nature as a pilot, probably driving far too fast?
We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
