Sandbraes
SANDBRAES: Helicopter Landing Area (H.L.A.) (Aka KNOCKENKELLY)
Note: These three pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©.
For some odd reason only pictures from 2020 were available.
Location: Just E of the A841, in Whiting Bay and just E of Knockenkelly, about 7nm SSE of Brodick on the SE part of the Isle of Arran
Period of operation: Unknown?
Landing area: Approximately 90m x 140m
NOTES: The initial info for this site came from the AAIB report 26693. This site, it appears, has been used for military, coastguard and air ambulance operations. It is listed here especially because it is an example of dozens of similar sites dotted around Scotland for air ambulance purposes. It needs to be remembered that prior to helicopters being used, there were also dozens of similar sites with a 400 metre run available for use by Brittan-Norman Islanders partaking in air ambulance rescue missions.
It now appears that no records exist of these sites? They were never published it seems? The locals knew where they were of course, as did the air ambulance aircrews. But that was all that was needed.
