Sandy Lane, Melton Mowbray
Note: This map only gives my rough estimate for the location. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.
SANDY LANE: Private ‘aerodrome’
Operated by: Leicestershire Flying Pou Club
Location: S of Melton Mowbray, near Sandy Lane, and possibly near or part of the later RAF MELTON MOWBRAY
Period of operation: 1936/37 only
NOTES: On the 3rd May 1936 a small airshow for ultralight aircraft was arranged principally to raise funds by the LFPC for an engine for their own Mignet Pou du Ciel. Bernard Collins, (later to become CFI at Rearsby), flew the Flea G-AEEC from Heston, (87 miles), in around 2.5 hours setting a record for Flea flying in that era.
The ‘Pou’ Club couldn’t get their aircraft, G-AEHG, to fly properly, only managing one short hop and in July a Kronfeld Drone G-AEJS was delivered. It was then realised that the site wasn’t very safe as an aerodrome so they transferred to Rearsby as the County Flying Club in the spring of 1937. From another source it appears that two privately owned aircraft were also based here – the Pou-du-Ciel G-AEIO and BAC/Kronfeld Drone G-ADMU.
