Just possibly, in the 2002 picture, two sections of runway are still visible? It is quite unusual in this part of the country for a WW2 airfield with hard runways to disappear without any trace. But this has certainly happened by 2018. I suppose the quarrying mostly accounts for this.

Even so, equipped with a WW2 map such as I have, the extent of the airfield can still be made out.

Military users: WW2: RAF Fighter Command

130 (Punjab) Sqdn   (Vickers-Supermarine Spitfires)

604 Sqdn   (Bristol Beaufighters later DH Mosquitos)

1943 USAAF    417th NFS [Night Fighter Squadron] flying Bristol Mk.VIF Beaufighters

(Late 1944): RAF Balloon Command (Was there such a Command?) Balloon storage

Location: E of A1, W to NW of Scorton village, 8nm SSW of Darlington

Period of operation: 1939 to 1945

Runways: 04/22   1097x46   hard           17/35   1097x46   hard
                07/25   1463x46   hard

NOTES: What intrigues me is that according to official records in late 1944 some 1190 RAF personnel were on station plus 158 WAAFs. This seems a lot of people to indulge in balloon storage but I suppose other types of equipment were stored here?
