SEAHAM HARBOUR: Man-carrying kite trials

NOTES: It appears that on the 21st of April 1902 Samuel F Cody provided a demonstration of his man-carrying kite, (perhaps with weights attached rather than with somebody on board?), to Col. Templer at Seaham harbour. Records state that although the trials were of minimal value due to low speed winds on the day, Col. Templer offered Cody two to three dozen yards of silk which would be better suited for kite flying in lighter winds. It appears Cody sent a request to the War Office asking for this silk. The request was turned down.

Today I suppose, we can only wonder if Cody might have advanced his experiments leading to a powered aeroplane, if he had been provided with this silk?

As mentioned elsewhere the development of man-carrying kites was perhaps a more significant factor in the evolution of powered flight than the glider!  And indeed, the first developed Bristol type was actually named the 'Boxkite'.
