Sellet Banks

Note: This map only gives a rough position within the UK. Attempts to find where SELLET BANKS are situated have failed. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.

SELLET BANKS: Early ‘secret’ experimental flying site

Operated by:  Mr Cedric Lee

Location: Near Whittington on the B6254, about 1.5 to 2nm SSW of Kirkby Lonsdale
Note: In those days situated in the county of WESTMORLAND - which it still is in fact. The more modern boundaries of Counties in the UK are purely an artifice drawn up by various interests to provide mostly administration convenience.

Period of operation: January to December, 1912?

Runway: A wooden trough lined with sheet metal and greased. The take-off length was 48 feet long with a short descending portion. Total length 52 feet.

NOTES: It appears that many flights, really quite successful, using an ‘annular-winged’ glider, (a circular type wing form), were made here during this period. However the overall claimed benefits of this design weren’t proved.

Later of course other designs using this layout did perform quite well as a powered aircraft, but the concept was doomed to fail.
