SHANLIEVE HILL: Accident site

NOTES: The AAIB report EW/C2010/10/03 amply illustrates that the aftermath of an aviation accident can in itself pose severe risks. In this case a helicopter had crashed nearby and another helicopter was being used to ferry police and accident investigators to a ‘barely’, (as it turned out), suitable landing site fairly close to the original crash site.

After several successful landings things went wrong for a number of reasons and the second helicopter was written off, fortunately with only minor injuries to those on board.

Although there is no intention to generally feature accident sites in this 'Guide', it is simply a fact of life that accidents will happen to aircraft. As the circumstances in this case were so exceptional it seemed worthy of inclusion. As far as I know, this is the only example of air crash investigators being involved in an air crash themselves - but I will be very interested to hear of another example - if one exists?
