SHERINGHAM: Temporary heliport
Operated by: BEA (British European Airways)
Location: ?
Period of operation: June to September 1948
NOTES: It is probably mostly forgotten about today that after WW2 BEA had a team of far sighted people dedicated towards the potential of using helicopters for both inter-city services and supplying an air service to areas with woefully inadequate road and rail connections. Even today Norfolk doesn't have a single motorway, but of course many people in the region regard this as a blessing.
Clearly the idea of providing an efficient helicopter service to Norfolk had a lot of merit. But why was Sheringham, just ten miles west of Cromer, seen as having revenue earning potential? Something to be explained.
If anybody can kindly offer advice as to where these BEA helicopters landed, this will be much appreciated.
