SHIPPON: Temporary aerodrome?
Operated by: Berkshire Aviation Tours
This picture from a postcard was kindly sent by Mike Charlton who has an amazing collection. See: www.aviationpostcard.co.uk
Location: Just W of the A34, roughly 1nm NW of Abingdon town centre
Period of operation: January 1926 only?
NOTES: This postcard (above) of the Berkshire Aviation Company Avro 504K G-EBKX has an inset showing one of their pilots, Geoffrey R Beck. Written on the back is the note: "Flew in this plane with this pilot Sunday Jan.31st 1926 from Shippon W of Abingdon."
This I think is very significant. During all the years I have been researching the 'Guide' it appears to be agreed that the 'Flying Circus' and 'Joy Ride' operaters only flew from spring to autumn. The winter being the time to service and replenish their aircraft. But here we have a first hand account clearly showing this concept was not entirely correct, I wonder if other examples can be found?
