Note: This map is derived from Google Earth, which clearly shows an aeroplane closely resembling a Cessna 172 parked outside.

SHIRLOWE: Private airstrip

Location: Roughly SE of High Ercall

Runway: 15/33   318   grass
Note: Looking at Google Earth, (image 2012), it is quite clear that the 15/33 runway length given in the AAIB report as being 318 metres is probably incorrect, unless the runway was lengthened after 2012? I would make it 250 metres at best. Not a problem for a 172 with just the pilot on board and half tanks in ideal dry conditions, preferably with some headwind. Otherwise, forget it, all the toys have been thrown from the pram.

Also, looking at the Google Earth image, there appears to be another grass runway, orientated 18/36 and probably 170 metres long - not a problem for landing a lightly laden 172.

NOTES: Initial info source AAIB report EW/G2016/03/08, concerning a take-off accident involving the Cessna 172S Skyhawk G-ENNK.
