South Otterington

SOUTH OTTERINGTON: Military Landing Ground

Military user: Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force

76 [Home Defence] Sqdn    (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2s, B.E.12s and Bristol F.2B Fighters in 1918)

Location: E of South Otterington, S to SW of Thornton-le-Moor, E of the A167, W of the A168, 4.5nm NW of Thirsk, 3nm SSE of Northallerton

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 28 acres        366 x 320

NOTES: Here again, as mentioned several times elsewhere, I’m astonished just how small many of these WW1 Landing Grounds were, basically similar in size to some smaller modern microlight airfields, and yet this one, like many others of similar size, was used for both day and night operations!
