St Andrews Sands

Notes: This map only shows my guess as to where this site may have been. If anybody can kindly offer advice this will be most welcome.

St ANDREWS SANDS: Military aerodrome    (Also known as WEST SANDS)

Military user: Used for instructional training by pilots of No.2 Sqdn at MONTROSE

Location: On the West Sands just N of St Andrews

Period of operation: 1913 only?

NOTES: Tents were erected from June 1913 to house the aeroplanes. Floatplanes also arrived here from DUNDEE. See photographic proof in ‘Montrose Airfield from 1913’. It seems Captain Longcroft was the first to arrive on ‘West Sands’ arriving an hour before expected by the local population.

The site was seen as ideal for training, enabling pilots to undertake short, straight flights for a period of three or so weeks to get used to flying a new and unfamiliar type of aeroplane like the BE.2 perhaps?
