Stamford flying sites
Note: This map only gives the location of Stamford town within the UK.
Due to the very unusual location of Stamford within LINCOLNSHIRE, shoe-horned into a 'box' in the south-west corner, it is entirely possible that the three sites listed could in fact be in either NORTHAMPTONSHIRE and/or RUTLAND.
If anybody could be kind enough to provide an exact location for any of the three sites listed, this will be most welcome.
A FIRST MENTION
It appears that starting at LOFTHOUSE PARK (YORKSHIRE) on Good Friday the 21st March 1913, Harold Blackburn (test pilot for the Blackburn aircraft manufacturing concern but not related) began a fortnight of 'exhibition flying' from LOFTHOUSE PARK and STAMFORD. Just why Stamford was chosen seems something of a mystery?
STAMFORD: Military aerodrome
Military users: RFC (Royal Flying Corps)
'A’ Flight, 38 (Home Defence) Squadron
(Flying FE.2b’s - possibly the BE.2c initially?)
Period of operation: Probably 1916 to 1918
STAMFORD: Temporary aerodrome
NOTES: It appears that on the 2nd July 1935 Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Stamford
STAMFORD: Private helipad
Operated by: Mr D C Johnson
Location: ?
NOTES: It is certainly not my intention to even attempt to list many of the private helipads which exist in the UK - there are many, many hundreds - and most are well hidden from the public gaze. Nevertheless, in a 'Guide' of British flying sites, their existence must be acknowledged, so I have spread a few around. Mostly, helipads listed within this 'Guide' are those either for general public use, such as hotels etc, or for use by air ambulance, the police, or institutions such as Trinity House for serving lighthouses and so on.
