Stonehouse Market Place

Note: This map is pretty accurate but perhaps not exact as the Market Place in Stonehouse seems to have disappeared as the suburbs of Plymouth expanded. I have chosen Market Street as perhpas this offers a clue? Any advice on this will be most welcome.

STONEHOUSE MARKET PLACE: Balloon ascent venue

NOTES: On the 14th November 1825 Mrs Graham, (apparently also known as “Her Majesty’s Aeronaute”), made an ascent from here. As pointed out elsewhere these ‘ascents’ were huge public events, and a crowd estimated at 50,000 thronged to see this ascent.

The area of Stonehouse is to the SW of modern day Plymouth City centre and N to NW of Millbay docks. After being aloft for fourteen minutes she alighted on the sea between Stoke Head and Yealm Point. So - possibly not her best day for aeronauting that year?

Hi, Stonehouse Market was north of Edgcumbe Street to the east of Stonehouse Bridge. The old road still labelled Market Street used to continue north to the market, cutting through where Lidl is now. Houses are located now where Stonehouse Market used to be. Ideal location for loads of sightseers to see the balloon that was supposed to travel north!
