Strangford Lough

Note:  This map only shows the position of Strangford Lough within the UK.

STRANGFORD LOUGH: Early experimental flying site

Operated by: J B Ferguson

Location: Where? Strangford Lough is a very big lake or Lough situated SE of Belfast
Note:  If anybody can kindly offer advice as to where Ferguson conducted his flying experiments, on or near the Lough, this will be much appreciated.

Period of operation: October 1911 only?

NOTES: See OLD PARK for a bit more info. J B Ferguson has of course gone down in history as the designer and producer of possibly the first really successful agricultural tractor, (in the UK?), restored examples of which are much prized and generally admired today. This said I’ll bet that few if any modern tractor drivers would ever want to have to operate one again?

If so, oddly enough, this doesn’t seem to always apply to aircraft. In the sense that I have met several airline pilots who would dearly love the chance to try their hand at the controls of some of the classic airliners. And indeed, a few do achieve this ambition. The same applies to many military pilots of course.
