Operated by: 2001: Mr J Sykes

Location: On eastern end of WW2 RNAS STRETTON, about 4.5nm SE of Warrington town centre

Period of operation:  Unknown?   Closed in 2018

Runway: 09/27   310x20   grass   (North of the eastern end of the disused 09/27 runway on STRETTON disused military aerodrome)

Note:  Just before it closed, it appears the runway, by then 08/26, was reduced to 240 metres

Note: There is a problem with this info - which in one flight guide states the runway is 400 metres long. A close look at this location on Google Earth appears to show that the runway is, at best, about 310 metres long, with not much more suitable land to extend it. It really is a problem for pilots, having to rely on what, in fact, turns out to be inaccurate information published in flight guides.

NOTES: In 1944 STRETTON was listed as being in LANCASHIRE but from 1948 appears it seems to have been included in CHESHIRE.

An AAIB report, EW/G2012/11/04 was rather interesting – it concerned the pilot of a Focke Wulf (Piaggio) P149D, D-EARY, having a landing accident here. I have had a few flights, but only as a passenger, in two examples of a P149D and would consider the type highly unsuitable for landing on a 310 metre long strip. And, indeed I would consider 400 metres far too marginal.

Could it be that this pilot mistook this for HAWKSVIEW?
