Studham Hall Farm
STUDHAM HALL FARM: Private airstrip
Note: Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: E of the A4146, about 3.5nm SSW of Dunstable town centre
Period of operation: 1946 to 1953? Possibly longer?
NOTES: The information about this airstrip came from an article in the September 2020 edition of Light Aviation magazine, concerning an air test of the de Havilland DH85 Leopard Moth G-ACMA conducted and written by Clive Davidson. Any article by Clive is always a treat because, if any history is known, he always tells the story.
But, what concerns us here is that during WW2 G-ACMA was impressed and carried the military serial BD148. Then: "In February 1946, BD148 was sold to de Havillands, repainted and returned to its former registration G-ACMA, and until 1953 was flown by the Company's Chairman, Alan Butler and his wife Lois, a former ARA pilot, out of their farm at Studham Hall."
Clive also tells us that, according to Geoffrey de Havillands log book, on the 14th August 1952, he flew G-ACMA for one hour and thirty five minutes, his last flight as pilot in command.
