Swan Lane

SWAN LANE: Temporary ‘joy-ride’ flying site

Operated by: Mr W G Pudney

Location: I can’t even guess where this venue was although it is reported by a very reliable and well informed source to have been in ESSEX

Period of operation: 1923 only?

NOTES: Commencing in January 1923 or so it seems, Mr W G Pudney flew his Avro 504K, (probably a three-seater version?), from several sites in ESSEX in 1923 at least. The recorded sites are CANVEY, GIDEA PARK, SWAN LANE and WICKFORD but it seems certain he used many other sites.

Does anybody today know about these other sites? If so, this advice will be most welcome.

When I put SWAN LANE, ESSEX into Google Maps it came up locations in Kelvedon Hatch, Loughton, Runwell, Stock and Wickford. So that provided no clues.

on behalf of wickford history www.wickfordhistory.org.uk we are currently trying to find info of wg pudney in relation to wickford . Swan lane wickford could relate to the continuation of the rd now brock hill was Chelmsford rd. You have a record of the temp airfield at Runwell. This is on fields behind brock hill once belonging to church end farm. Please email me for further info regards geoff whiter
