Pleasure flights: Avro Transport Co, Welsh Aviation Co

Period of operation: 1919 to 1922 only? Later operations during the 1930s.

NOTES: In August 1921 records appear to show that the Welsh Aviation Co demonstrated aerobatics in a Sopwith 1F.1Camel G-EAWN from 'Swansea'. This aeroplane was later ‘dismantled’ at Stag Lane aerodrome, (NNW London), in 1922.

A listing was found for Avro 504K G-EAWK being operated from Swansea by the Welsh Aviation Co in 1921. Presumably this aircraft was used for 'joy-rides'? The type was a firm favourite in those days for operators involved in this business.

In April 1922 the aircraft was sold to Evan Williams who, on the 2nd of October the same year crashed it and drowned in Swansea Bay. Evan Williams had also purchased two more Avro 504Ks G-EAWL and G-EAWM. These were, it seems, dismantled at Swansea after his death. Presumably Evan Williams was also involved in setting up a 'joy ride' operation?

These flight demonstrations/joy rides/charter flights were flown from Swansea Sands near Brynmill.
