Telscombe Cliffs
Notes: This area is now vastly different to how it would have been prior to WW2. Today an overspill suburb of Brighton blending with Newhaven.
TELSCOMBE CLIFFS: Military aerodrome (also known as NEWHAVEN)
Note: This picture from a postcard was kindly sent by Mike Charlton, and mainly illustrates a gliding site in Peacehaven. It was only by inspecting the picture more closely that I soon realised that, in the background, this aerodrome was featured.
Military users: RFC/RAF Night Landing Ground for 50 (HD) Sqdn 1916 and 39 (HD) Sqdn 1918
39 [Home Defence] Sqdn (B.E.2, BE.12c and probably it seems the S.E.5a. Possibly the Bristol F.2 Fighter was also flown here?
50 [Home Defence] Sqdn (Probably flying Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2s and B.E.12s)
78 [Home Defence] Sqdn (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 types)
RFC Flight Station 1916 to 1917
RFC Aircraft Acceptance Park 1917 to 1918
RAF Marine Operations Station 1918 to 1919
Location: W of Peacehaven town centre, N of A259, about 3.5nm WNW of Newhaven
Period of operation: 1916 to 1919
Site area: 50 acres 503 x 457
