A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for painstakingly researching this location. Which was, to put it mildly, a very tight spot in which to stage his displays, including carrying passengers. His Blériot monoplane clearly having what today we would regard as STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities.
Note: The aerial photo above, was published in The Sphere on the 23rd August 1913. The third item, the newspaper excerpt, was published in the - wait for it and draw a deep breath - the Horfield and Bishopston Record and Montpelier District Free Press on the 23rd August 1913.
Note: The photo of the Blériot was published in the East Kent Times and Mail on the 20th August 1913. The two part newspaper article was published in the Yarmouth Independent on the 23rd August 1913. The photo of Salmet flying was published in The Sphere, also on the 23rd August 1913.
Note: The picture of Salmet heading east, together with a passenger, was also from The Sphere, published on the 23rd August.
JUST A BIT MORE
Note: The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database. It now appears that Salmet had his Blériot delivered here by road, arriving to be assembled on the 14th August. If in time to make a flight is not known, or the reason for a delivery by road. The year before on his first Grand Tour, also sponsored by the Daily Mail, Salmet had flown between all the venues.
