The Lawns

THE LAWNS:   Temporary Landing Ground

Operated by:   Henri Salmet

Location:  On The Lawns in Cliftonville in Margate, roughly about a mile E of Margate town centre

Period of operation:  Not known exactly, but the 15th and 16th August 1913 certainly

A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY

We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for painstakingly researching this location. Which was, to put it mildly, a very tight spot in which to stage his displays, including carrying passengers. His Blériot monoplane clearly having what today we would regard as STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities.

JUST A BIT MORE

Note:  The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database. It now appears that Salmet had his Blériot delivered here by road, arriving to be assembled on the 14th August. If in time to make a flight is not known, or the reason for a delivery by road. The year before on his first Grand Tour, also sponsored by the Daily Mail, Salmet had flown between all the venues.
