The Mall
THE MALL: Military Emergency Landing Ground
Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©
Military user: RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service)
Location: Running NE from Buckingham Palace
Period of operation: 1914
NOTES: As with other central London ELGs such as HYDE PARK and REGENT’S PARK etc I’d love to know if this ELG was ever used?
If I was flying in the RNAS in those days I'd like to think that the temptation to 'arrange' an engine failure, which were very common, would be nigh on irresistible. What a great entry in the log book.
I also suspect, but don't know, that access to The Mall by the public in their cars, was probably prohibited - thereby making it generally usable as an ELG.
We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
