Without any doubt the picture of GA in the UK has changed quite dramatically over the last twenty years or so. The appearence of very capable 'microlights' for both training and touring, has transformed the whole scene. When I learnt to fly back in the late 1980s, most of us were punching holes in the sky with mostly American 'spamcans' having engines derived from the late 1930s. Old 'thumpers' but, if looked after, very reliable.
I have flown a few much more modern types, and they were indeed a revelation. Much lighter, usually more streamlined, and having a much better power to weight ratio. Ask any pilot, not just private plonkers like myself. and all will crave - more power! And since I stopped flying ten years ago, (dated from 2025), things have progressed much further.
