Tirfogrien
TIRFOGRIEN: Private airfield
Note: As this location has two runways, I describe it as being an airfield - rather than, if it had only one, being an airstrip.
The first three pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©. The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: Mr Hugh S Urquhart
Location: Just NE of Croy village, about 2nm SE of the centre of INVERNESS airport
Period of operation: Around late 2019, early 2020 to -
Runways: 2020 = 04/22 170 grass 06/24 190 grass
2024 = 04/22 140 grass 06/24 165 grass
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location and telling us that the Zenair CH701UL, G-MULE, was based here. Most unusually in this 'Guide', I think the pictures above clearly illustrate the very sensible way in which Mr Urquhart went about becoming familiarised with owning G-MULE.
The Zenair CH701UL is a very capable short-field type. Perhaps indeed being described as execptional in its class type. But, when getting acquainted with flying a new type, it is highly recommended that, at first, you leave 'large' margins for error. It amuses me that just 30 metres can be considered as being "a large margin for error", but, with this STOL type aeroplane, quite enough to suffice.
