Warren Mere
WARREN MERE: Private airstrip
These three pictures are from my Google Earth© derived database
Operated by: Mr William Henry Whitbread
Location: Just N of the A3, about 3.5nm SW of Godalming town centre
Period of operation: 1946 to 1947 only?
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a long-term friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location. He found that the Auster J/1 Autrocrat, G-AGXX, was registered to Mr W H Whitbread from 17.06.46 until 04.07.46 before being re-registered to Whitbread & Company until 16.09.47. But, in both cases it is listed that G-AGXX was based here, at WARREN MERE.
I will happily admit to undertaking guesswork here. An Auster needs to be hangared, being fabric covered, and the 'hangar' in the first picture above is typical of many built during this period. But were was the airstrip? Clearly much can change over eighty years, especially when trees have been planted, so I can only suppose, looking at modern pictures, that the 02/20 strip of 370 metres that I have chosen, seems the most likely? And, the position of the hangar, (if that is what it is?), would also fit the general 'picture'.
It is quite typical of course that although my cardinal rule after a quarter of a century working on this 'Guide' is: Do not make assumptions! And what have I done here? Make assumptions! If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
