Wharly Hall
WHARLY HALL: Private airstrip
Location: E of the M42, SSW of Hampton-in-Arden and roughly 2.5nm ESE of Solihull town centre
Period of operation: 1946 to 1949 (only?)
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location in 2023. He discovered that the Auster J/1 Autocrat, G-AGVL, was registered to the address: Wharly Hall, Eastcote, Hampton-in-Arden. From 10.01.46 to 14.04.49, and the base for G-AGVL was given in the British Civil Register as Hampton-in Arden. Wharly Hall itself seems to have been demolished many years ago.
The possible location of a 300 metre airstrip in the picture above is pure guesswork on my part so might be way off the mark? This said, I have noted that the layout of fields in England often remain in place for long periods of time, and, that the trees may well have been planted at some point since in the last eighty years. Also, many airstrips have been laid out across two or three fields with gaps made in the hedges/fences.
As always, if anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be much appreciated. Plus I suppose I should add that this 'Guide' is often as much about posing questions as seeking definitive answers.
