Note:  The first two pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©, the local area and area views are from my Google Earth © derived database. The dating  system of Google Earth © images is often well wide of the mark, (why?), but still a great resource.

Operated by: Mr Henrick M Darlington

Location:  Just W of Pleshey village, about 6nm NNW of Chelmsford town centre, and roughly 8nm SE of the centre of STANSTED airport

Period of operation:  Unknown?  Possibly from 2022? Perhaps quite a bit earlier?

Runway:  09/27   600   grass

NOTES:  We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location. He had been tracking, (in 2025), the route of the Vans RV-8, G-XSEA on that amazing gizzmo.

MY COMMENTS

When I was flying I was a huge fan of flying into farm strips, and indeed for several years was part of a group based on one. This said, I was always aware of the strict need to obtain PPR (Prior Permission Required), before visiting. Over the years I have had just a very few people complain about this 'Guide' featuring their strip, but, once my intentions were explained, all but one were happy to be included. Indeed, more often I have had people contacting me asking for their strip to be included.

This country, (see my article on the subject), has a heritage of private airstrips unequalled anywhere else in the world, (by area), and I think we should celebrate this. Many of course operate under the 28 day rule, which means that if a strip is operated up to twenty-eight days a year, it does not need planning permission. (Writing this in 2025 - does this rule still apply?). The majority of pilots are very well behaved and respect the rules and regulations, but of course, as in any other area of human activity - there are always a few scoundels.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

Most strip operators are far too forgiving to take any action, except to express their annoyance. I reckon a much more robust approach should be taken, (unless, obviously a landing was made due to some distress). Get the tractor out and block them in - showing the route by foot off the premises. Indeed, if in the mood, and if the tractor has a shovel or fork-lift attachment, threaten to remove a wing, or tail etc. Do all farmers have a shotgun handy? If so, would be a good idea to have one slung over your shoulder.
