Eskmeals

Note: This map only shows the position of Eskmeals, a village I presume, within the UK. The reason for being vague about the WW2 location is simply because, looking at the existing MoD area on Google Earth, there doesn't appear to be somewhere particularly suited for use by fixed wing aircraft. Oddly perhaps, I seem unable without spending a lot of time on the subject, to discover what types 1 AACU were flying in WW2. Plus of course, even knowing these details certainly does not indicate that all the types flown, (and AACUs usually had a few types at their disposal), actually landed here.

ESKMEALS: Military Landing Ground, later helipad

NOTES: Used by 1 AACU (Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Unit) in WW2 it seems.

The Eskmeals Firing Range are still in existence today and part of the MoD Weapons Research Establishment. Apparently sometimes firing weapons up to 80,000 ft.

I suppose it will be a vain hope today, but if anybody can kindly offer advice about where No.1 AACU were landing, this will be much appreciated.

Military helicopters have been, and still are, visiting the site? Possibly civilian helicopters too, transporting contractors and other experts etc. This is borne out by the helipad situated fairly close to, and roughly N of, the main entrance to the site.
