Palmer Park

PALMER PARK: Man-lifting kite operating site

Operated by: Mr S Cody

Location: 1nm E of Reading town centre

Period of operation: Early 1900s?

NOTES: A bit marginal for this 'Guide' perhaps? I think not on balance because simply getting people airborne at that period in history was surely a significant feat of aviation which must be an important link between balloon flights and the advent of fixed wing gliding and later powered flight?

Indeed, in the early days the distinction between kites, gliders and aeroplanes was quite blurred, all being seen generally speaking, as part and parcel of the quest for manageable flight. I think it is significant that the first successful Bristol powered aeroplane was named, the 'Boxkite'.
