Location: In Stanhoe village, about 2.25nm E of Docking and roughly 15nm NE of King's Lynn town centre
Period of operation: Far as known, 1997 to 2016
Runways: 17/35 480 grass 08/26 350 grass
NOTES: It was Mr Graham Frost, a great long-term friend of this 'Guide', who contacted me to ask what I made of this location, pointing out that the Auster J/1 Alpha, G-AHSS, was registered at The Old Rectory, Church Lane, Stanhoe from 1997 until 2016. Reverting to the age old scientific principle that if it waddles like a duck, and quacks like a duck.....it probably is a duck, this location looks to me to be a well laid out private aerodrome. As always, if anybody can kindly confirm, this will be much appreciated.
UNIQUE?
When this 'Guide', came online, a few private strip operators were not at all happy to have their airstrips listed. But when I explained that one of the main purposes, having flown from and into several farm strips for many years, that in this respect the UK has an unique aviation heritage, the majority were then happy to have their airstrips listed. And, I thought this heritage should be recorded and celebrated. No other country in the world has so many private airstrips contained within such a 'small' geographical area. Typically having over five hundred active for many years since WW2. the majority in England.
I also try to emphasise that most are very strictly private, and pilot visitors are not welcome, unless invited. Indeed, many operate under the 28 day rule, when if only used for 28 days or less, planning permission is not required. Therefore, anybody landing without prior permission deprives the strip operator of a days flying.
