Welburn

WELBURN:  Gliding site

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This location was known as WELBURN HALL prior to WW2. See seperate listing for more info. Later the Slingsby company renamed the aerodrome as KIRKBYMOORSIDE for which there is also a seperate listing.

Operated by: Slingsby Flying Club

Location: S of the A170 and roughly SE of Kirkbymoorside village

Period of operation: 1950s and perhaps into the 1960s?

NOTES:  In the 1957 The Aeroplane directory, the Slingsby Flying Club, primarily intended for use by employees of Slingsby Sailplanes Ltd, were operating two Kirkby Tutors and one Kite 1. Which seems a bit mean considering how well Slingsby were doing at that time. I have been unable to find out how they were being launched. Any advice will be most welcome.
